Frequently Asked Questions
Who runs the League? South Dakota Junior Football has been a completely volunteer run League since its inception in 1969. A volunteer Board of Directors oversee all the League affairs and is made up of over 20 board members. There are no paid staff so all the funds go back to the kids and the betterment of the League.
Who can participate?
2nd through 8th graders may participate. 2nd graders participate in our Rookie Division. 3rd and 4th graders participate in our Peewee Division. 5th and 6th graders participate in our Junior Division. 7th and 8th graders participate in our Senior Division.
How many participants are there?
In 2014, 2,515 players played on 132 teams.
How much does it cost to play?
Early Bird Player Registration fee is $120 if paid by May 2nd, after May 2nd $160. If registered in person at the SD Junior Football Building at the Sanford Sports Complex or the Yankton Summit Center, at the designated times and dates, you have the option to receive $120 in raffle tickets to sell. Sell the tickets, keep the money to repay your paid registration fee, then turn in the ticket stubs at equipment handout in July. So, it is possible for a player to play for free if they sell all of their raffle tickets. Drawing will be held at season end.
How do we sign up to play? Online player registration is available at www.sdjuniorfootball.com. Also on our web site you can download our Player Registration form, print, complete and mail in with your payment. In person player registration is at the SD Junior Football Building at the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls or the Yankton Summit Center (see league events or schedules). Note; if you want to sell raffle tickets, you must register in person at one of these two locations.
What equipment is needed?
SDJFB provides all needed equipment except football shoes, practice shirt/jersey, and a t-shirt to wear under your shoulder pads.
How are teams assigned?
All new players and players moving up a division are placed on teams. Each player is assigned a random number and these numbers are plotted on maps. Teams are then drawn on the maps to include the appropriate number of players. No consideration is given to school attended, size or skill level. For players living in towns other than Brandon, Harrisburg, Sioux Falls and Yankton, players are placed on your town team. If numbers warrant, the players will be split randomly to form more than one team in your town.
Where are practices held?
Practices are held in a park or grass area that is convenient for the players on the team. Since teams are formed geographically, the practice site should be close to all players home addresses.
Where are games played?
All games are played on the South Dakota Junior Football Fields, located in the Sanford Sports Complex in northwest Sioux Falls and at the Yankton High School.
How much time is involved?
Practice starts on Tuesday, August 4th, 2015. For approx. the first three weeks, until our regular season games start, teams will generally practice 4 or 5 times per week, at least 2 hours per day. After our regular season games begin on August 22nd, there are typically two practices and one game each week.
How many games are played?
Each player is guaranteed 6 regular season games and 2 post-season playoff games. Rookies play a 8 game regular season and do not have playoffs.
Will we play in the Dakota Dome?
Dakota Dome games are not guaranteed. The league intention is for all Junior and Senior teams to play their final game of the season in the Dakota Dome. No Pee Wee teams will play in the dome. The Pee Wee Championship and 3rd place games are played at Howard Wood Field.
Can we get a refund if we decide not to play?
Due to the significant amount of work involved in processing player registrations, assigning players to teams and assuring we have sufficient equipment for all who register, refunds are not granted if a player decides not to play.
